Before you contact us...

it is ideal to prepare your genealogical research documents and think about a few important things in advance. Below you will find some tips on how to proceed.

How to start

We usually know the fates and biographical dates of our parents and grandparents, but most people's memories don't go back much further. The ideal place to start is to visit living ancestors and record their memories. Even more important are official and private documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates, school report cards, university diplomas, membership cards, wedding announcements, letters, correspondence, etc.

Specify the starting person of the family tree

This is important because all genealogical research is based on the starting person. It could be you, or perhaps your life partners, children, siblings or parents if you are giving them a family tree as a gift, but it could also be more distant relatives if you wish to research their family branch.

Specify the scope and budget of the research

Family trees can take many forms. The most popular are the so-called genealogical outputs, which include all ancestors of the initial person (i.e., parents, grandparents, grandparents' parents, etc.) along all lines. The result tends to be a nicely symmetrical expanding family chart that can be traced back to the 17th century and in some cases further back in time. It is recommended to limit the research in advance by the number of generations researched, as the number of people researched grows with each generation and so does the cost. Most of our clients order one of the options below, but of course we are happy to suggest other solutions if you would prefer not to choose between them.
